Danish cord is a rope like material about 1/8 inch diameter.  It gets its ropelike appearance from the three individual paper strands being twisted tightly together almost like nylon.  Often the chairs have this cubic “basket weave.”  Sometimes what appears to be Danish Cord is actually made of a more raw material called seagrass which is a little more difficult to work with.  It is fantastic material and fun in design but slightly more difficult

to work with, if only because it is slightly more rare that I work with it! This is a before and after example of a fantastic set of chairs I fixed a few years ago. I see a lot of footstools with this design and I have even seen a plastic based cord…what a shedding mess once it’s time had passed! I recommend the Danish cord for it’s durability and polished appearance. Seagrass, though more authentic just does not have as long a lifespan.
