Hickory Splint or Split Weave

Laced or Woven Cane | Fiber Rush | Machine or Pressed Cane | Natural Rush | Danish Cord | Hickory Splint or Split Weave

Traditional basket weaves like the herringbone twill are the most common splint or split weave, but you can also weave diamonds and chevrons.  Labor intensive hickory bark is beautiful and costly to repair so most caners use a manufactured flat reed or binder cane, available in sizes from 1/4 inch – 1 inch.

You can dye the flat reed to make a stunning vibrant seat, but the binder cane is difficult to stain due to the natural silica coating.  Bark or reed need to be shellac for longevity but it is not necessary with binder cane.  You can mix flat reed and binder cane to make a cool design.
